Between Memory and Transformation

At the heart of Selma Selman’s operatic performance is the dismantling of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which she gave her father for his 60th birthday two years ago and inherited after his recent death. Once a symbol of emancipation and freedom, the car now becomes an object of remembrance, reflecting an economy that shapes Selman’s life and artistic practice. In her paintings, she also uses discarded objects such as cars and satellite dishes as carriers of personal stories. The dismantling becomes a ritual marking a transition: the car is no longer her father’s prized possession, but not yet a work of art. Selman is accompanied by opera singer Natasa Tasic Knezevic, sound engineer Dauwd, a cellist and her performance team, Muhamed Selma, Meho Husic and Andreas Ritt.

The performance is organised in collaboration with Schauspielhaus Zürich and the Mercedes-Benz Collection.
